Michael Martin Murphey’s career stands out as a colorful thread in the vibrant tapestry that we know as country music.

From his outlaw music days in Austin playing alongside Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, to his more recent artistic direction as a performer of traditional cowboy songs, it’s clear that Michael brings a tremendous talent and passion to all of his creative efforts.

It’s because his soul runs deep. Even if you’ve never seen Michael preform in person, his albums conjure vivid images of the American West and feelings of being connected to the land and its people.

Michael’s songs are enduring and have the rare ability to transcend generations. “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” “Wildfire,” “Carolina in the Pines,” “Long Line of Love,” and “What’s Forever For” are all here in this collection, along with countless others of his  lesser-known songs that are equally as brilliant.

With over 50 years in the music industry, Michael has received his fair share of recognition throughout his illustrious journey.  In his early career, Rolling Stone Magazine named him "best new singer-songwriter in the nation"; his song "Wildfire" went Platinum in selling over 2 million copies since its 1975 original release; he's been inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum as a Lifetime Achieve Award recipient; and his music has also been nominated for several Country Music Awards and a Grammy.

Even with his professional success and the many accolades that have followed, Michael is still a down-to-earth guy who is just as happy riding the range on his favorite horse as he his performing for his fans.

ROAD BEYOND THE VIEW

Michael Martin Murphey’s 2021 album, ROAD BEYOND THE VIEW, is really not a Michael Martin Murphey album; it's a Michael Martin Murphey and Ryan Murphey album. It's a full collaboration of father and son. From the lyrics, melodies, arrangements, and instrumentation—the dynamic family duo brings their creativity to the project in equal parts. They also merge a little country with a whole lot of jazz, and the end result is something that feels fresh yet maintains a real sense of timelessness.

ROAD BEYOND THE VIEW is full of musical impressions of life in Northern New Mexico and a deep love for the culture and the artists who call the place home. The two Murphey men continue in the tradition of interpreting the exquisitely beautiful, yet often challenging, landscapes and cultures of the Southwest in music. The songs contained in this album are musical petroglyphs—with a goal of taking the local culture and making something enduring and universal of it.

AUSTINOLOGY - ALLEYS OF AUSTIN

Austinology, is a collection of Michael Martin Murphey’s songwriting perspective on the early ’70s Austin music scene. The album features songs with Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Amy Grant, Lyle Lovett, Randy Rogers, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, Gary P. Nunn, and the Last Bandoleros; Jerry Jeff Walker, DJango Walker, Bob Livingston, and more.

Inspired by the recent project “Outlaws and Armadillos” at in Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame — Murphey was interviewed for its accompanying film — Murphey decided to honor Austin music history in his own way too. Back in the 70’s, music in Austin was stripped down, bare bones country western music, usually on an acoustic instrument or two. There were a few clubs, and things were also really starting to pick up around the early ’70s.

Murphey and co-producer Chris Harris chose songs for this album, Murphey’s songs, that were from the era of 1968-1975, a time when a lot of musicians moved to to Nashville community, among them Willie Nelson, and things were beginning to thrive and grow. It’s mainly his own songs, with a couple by Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson too.

The songs are produced with a hushed style on clear toned acoustic guitars and vocals, with piano prominently present. The album maintains an overall air of nostalgic consistency. Murphey’s “Wildfire,” the ubiquitous country-western standard, lays the foundation for the style of the rest of the collection. “Alleys of Austin,” South Canadian River Song,” “Geronimo’s Cadillac,” and we’re off down memory lane, not only with Murphey’s catalog, but in the early Austin style too — soft rock, piano, acoustic guitar numbers telling detailed lyrical stories. “Texas Trilogy” — “Daybreak,” “Train Ride,” and “Bosque County” again evoke a moodiness and exemplary songwriting.

The collection highlights the now renowned Texas songwriting style, and the nostaliga for its good songwriting that plays in our collective unconsciousnesses.

WILDFIRE! GREATEST HITS

In his review on the Allmusic web site, Jonathan Widran praised the album’s "warmth and familiarity" and the way the new recordings capture "the romance and adventurous Western spirit" of Michael's career.

“Listening to the songs on this disc is the musical equivalent of inviting a handful of old and dear friends over to dinner. They're a bit older and wiser since they were last seen, and the details of the stories they share have changed slightly with age, but their warmth and familiarity win listeners over instantly. More than simply an exciting greatest-hits project from one of contemporary music's most beloved and enduring artists, the collection features completely new recordings of 11 country, cowboy, and pop crossover classics that perfectly capture the romance and adventurous Western spirit of the singer/songwriter's 30-year recording career, including his best loved hits”

COWBOY SONGS VI:  TALL GRASS & COOL WATER

The title of Michael Martin Murphey’s project says it all, Tall Grass And Cool Water: Cowboy Songs VI, Buckaroo Blue Grass III. Murphey’s distinctive voice and guitar are backed up by musicians such as Pat Flynn, Sam Bush, Craig Nelson, Andy Leftwich, Andy Hall, Charlie Cushman, Mike Bub, Troy Engle, Ronnie McCoury, and Michael’s son, Ryan Murphey.

To be sure, there is less actual bluegrass content on this effort than Michael's first two Buckaroo Blue Grass projects. In fact, this is a rather mellow album, recorded at an easy lope geared to bringing these cowboy story songs to life. The highlights include the two faster bluegrass-style cuts, “I’m A Texas Cowboy” and “Way Out There,” which features co-lead vocals by Carin Mari.

HIGH STAKES

On this 2016 album, "High Stakes: Cowboy Songs VII,"  iconic western artist Michael Martin Murphey pleads on the stunningly beautiful Australian cowboy song, "Campfire On The Road":

"We must never let 'em take this life away / Old stock routes belong to one and all / Drovers, dreamers all agree / Poets, Aborigines / We have a right to light a campfire on the road."

The lyric underscores the dramatic tone of Murphey's return to his Texas-cowboy roots at a time when we are facing the rapid deterioration of our crowded world's most precious resources, land and water. Over the past 40 years, Murphey has left an indelible mark on the American music landscape.

Murphey returns to his singing cowboy roots on High Stakes to tell riveting human stories of love and hate, sin and redemption, loss and risk, failure and victory, revenge and forgiveness and family legacy.

RED RIVER DRIFTER

In recent years Michael has been exploring the similarities between bluegrass and American cowboy music. But for Red River Drifter, he brought in some very eclectic and unexpected elements to the writing process. ''I wrote songs that drew from what is inspiring me at this point in my life,'' he says. ''Every style was fair game. We intentionally did not follow formulas or rules.''  This album includes lots of great new originals including "Shake It Off,"  "Mountain Storm," and "Peaceful Country."
